What is a Stubble

The learning corner

After shaving or trimming, the hair continues to grow. Depending on your hair, hair can emerge as quickly as within a few hours to a few days. On men, beard stubble appears as  dark patches on the cheek, chin and neck that are rough to the touch.

The “five o’clock shadow” refers to the dark stubble that become visible by the end of the day. While stubble used to be in fashion  years ago, today men prefer a clean-shaven look with no stubble (or as little as possible).

Reader Emails: What’s the best beard clipper?

Looking for the best beard clipper…

Hi X,

I’m just writing to get a little advice about beard clippers. I’ve been looking for quite some time now for a good quality beard clipper. I picked up a personal clipper a few months ago, only to have it burn out after a few months of daily use. I’d like to know what the best beard clipper available is, a nice professional quality one that would be used by a barber or salon.

Thanks,
Gordon H. from Tennessee

Hi Gordon,

I’ll try to answer you question to the best of my ability. First off, there really is no “best beard clipper” on the market, because they all come with different feature sets and different price points, looking to appeal to different segments of the market. The best beard clipper for a guy who loves camping and travels frequently could be vastly different than the best beard clipper for a guy who works in an office.

From my years working as an assistant in my father’s barber shop, I can give you a few guidelines in helping choose that best beard clipper for your specific needs, along with a few brands that have stood the test of time in terms of quality, and durability.

My favorite beard clippers

Andis beard clippers

I’d tell you to start your search off with the Andis clippers first, my father used to love those clippers and we pretty much ONLY used those in the store. They’re good quality beard clippers, last a long time, and really give a nice, close trim.

Wahl beard clippers

In the last few years, I’ve become a big fan of Wahl clippers as well. The Wahl series is very nice as well, my barber carries those and the Andis clippers.

Wahl 79524-1001 Deluxe Chrome Pro with Multi-Cut Clipper & Trimmer
Wahl 79524-1001 Deluxe Chrome Pro with Multi-Cut Clipper and Trimmer

These are both high quality brands that I’d heartily recommend to anybody looking to step up their grooming. This isn’t saying that other brands, like the nice Panasonic or Philips clippers, aren’t good as well. They’re just not professional grade clippers that I’d personally use, if I were working in a barber shop again. They just weren’t designed as durable as the Wahls or the Andis, and just can’t take the same level of abuse.

How to Choose a Best Electric Beard Trimmer

How to Choose a Best Electric Beard Trimmer

The convenience of electric beard trimmers

George Clooney BeardWhether you’re a busy executive late for a meeting, or a parent with very little spare time on their hands, just about every guy needs to find more time in their day. Why burn precious minutes on some task as mundane and unimportant as manually trimming your beard? It’s time that you could be devoting to something far more important, especially if you could accomplish the same grooming in a fraction of the time. It’s time to step up to an electric trimmer, but how does one go about choosing the best electric beard trimmer for their facial structure and beard?

In this post, we’ll go over some of the most important criteria in choosing a clipper so that you, as a consumer, can make an informed decision and decide what the best electric beard trimmer is for your needs.

Features to look for:

The feature sets available on beard trimmers is enormous, and you’ll have to decide which features are important to you and which you can live without. Here are some of the most useful features on the best electric beard trimmers on the market today.

- Wet/Dry capability. If you’re looking to save just a little extra time, you may be the type to shave in the shower. Look for a wet/dry trimmer so that you can bring it into the shower with you.

- Batteries or cordless? Batteries are an added feature to many of the top end trimmers. It’s a nice feature to have, but they’re not 100% necessary. You can get along fine with a corded beard trimmer, as long as you have an outlet nearby. For travellers, having a trimmer with a long battery life is ideal, because you’re guaranteed to have a working trimmer, regardless of your accommodations.

- Adjustable to different hair length. This is an important feature that you might want to try to keep. Many clippers come with add-ons that allow you to adjust the hair length, so that you get a uniform trim across your beard without much work.

- Price is also an important factor in choosing your beard trimmer. There are some truly great (and very expensive) trimmers on the market, upwards of $500, but if you’re just looking for something that does the job you might settle for something in the $50 range instead. As a rule of thumb, a budget beard trimmer will cost under $30, a decent one will cost around $30-$50, and getting the best electric beard trimmer will run you at least $100 or more.

Be sure to do your research, because there are a lot of beard trimmers on the market, and you want to be able to easily discern the difference between the worst and the best electric beard trimmer. I’ve used quite a few in my time, and here are some my electric beard trimmer recommendations.

Electric beard trimmers I recommend:

1. Andis Professional 04710 T-Outliner Personal Trimmer

2. Wahl 9876-2001 Lithium Ion All-In-One Trimmer with Rotating Head

3. Remington MB-200 Titanium Mustache and Beard Trimmer

5 O’Clock Shadow: Best Beard Trimmer for Stubble

Lose the 5 o’clock stubble…

What’s in fashion right now?

Robert Downey Jr 2

Your can forget about the clean metrosexual look, that’s yesterday’s news. Today’s look is a stronger, more masculine look, with just a little bit of an ‘edge’. Actors are all sporting the designer stubble look, guys like Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Orlando Bloom, and Colin Ferrell. Even more baby-faced actors like Leonardo Di Caprio are growing a little stubble. It tends to give their faces a more angular look, a more mature look. It can create hard angles from soft cheeks and help minimize a soft chin. It’s not hard to see why this trend has made a comeback.

How do I get designer stubble?

Unfortunately, it’s not really a case of just “stop shaving”, because that doesn’t really do much to get the look and keep it. You could, but you’d just end up with a scraggly beard, not a nice layer of stubble. To get that nice 5 o’clock shadow takes time and dedication.

You really need to have the right tools to maintain it, starting with the a good trimmer. Many shaver companies have developed stubble specific trimmers that are absolutely perfect for getting that cool designer stubble look. We’ve reviewed a few and can provide some suggestions of what we consider the best beard trimmer for stubble, based on price, value, and quality.

So what is the best beard trimmer for stubble?

This is a difficult choice, deciding which could be considered the best beard trimmer for stubble. There are quite a few good trimmers on the market, and most will do the job pretty satisfactory. When it comes down to it though, you want a trimmer that provides you with an easy experience, meaning you don’t have to go back and touch it up every day to maintain the look you want. Additionally, it should be versatile, letting you choose the stubble length. Maybe you want to go for that slightly wilder 3-day stubble, instead of the cleaner 5 o’clock shadow. Some trimmers will allow you incredible precision, down to under a millimeter.

Here are a few of our top choices to help get you started:

1) Philps Norelco QT4021 Stubble Trimmer

2) Wahl Revolution Beard Trimmer

3)Norelco Trimmer Vaccum Superior Trim T780
