How to treat razor burns

Razor burns are a result of shaving. There are many causes, which include shaving dry (with no shaving cream or an insufficient way of protecting the skin during shaving), shaving in a hurry, shaving with a dull blade, applying to much pressure on the blade or repetitive passing over an area of the skin. The too close contact or the repetitive contact of a blade with the skin can cause a rash (usually mild) with a pink or red color. Fortunately, in most cases, the irritation doesn’t last more than a day or two. Sometimes, burning or itching sensations and raised bumps (called pseudofollicultis barbae) can also occur.

To avoid razor burns, it is important to use the right shaving cream for you skin, a proper razor or a good electric razor. But if you are dealing with a painful rash, read more to find out how to treat razor burns.

First, if you are having a bad day and experiencing some razor burns, avoid scratching the red or pink area, as you will only further irritate the rash, and possibly cause an infection, which is much worst than a simple skin irritation. Put some cool wet and clean towels on the razor burns. Avoid at all cost putting cologne or some aftershave on that area, as the alcohol they contain will cause you some pain and irritate the skin further.

Second, use an aloe vera gel or emollient cream to soothe the skin. Try to use natural products and scent free creams or gels. If the itching or burning sensation is severe, you can use a cortisone cream that will help with the redness and discomfort (consult with your doctor if you need more information about the cortisone cream).

Third, remember that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. Which means you should really prevent razor burns rather than treating them. Exfoliation, moisturizing and the use of a sharp blade or a good electric shaver are part of razor burns prevention. How to prevent razor burns in 5 steps

You have probably suffered the pain of a razor burn at least once in our life. If razor burns seem to be part of your daily life, these tips may be a good addition to the right shaving techniques to avoid or reduce the chances or razor burns.

1. Exfoliation. This is crucial steps. Before you shave, take a hot shower, wash your face in warm water or apply a hot towel to your face. This will help soften your skin and your facial hair and open up your pores. Then make sure to scrub your face with a loofah or any type of facial scrub tool/lotion. The scrubbing action will help remove any excess of dead skin, allowing the ingrown hair to pop out, hence reducing the burns and rash.

2. Use shaving shaving cream. A good shaving gel or shaving cream is preferred over soap. The shaving cream will create a think lather that will protect your skin while allowing for a close shave. If you have a sensitive skin, avoid the use of shaving products containing menthol, which can numb the skin, making it harder for you to determine how much pressure you are putting on the razor.

3. Use a sharp blade. Dull blades can cause razor burns because they force you to apply more pressure on the razor in order to obtain a good shave or force you to pass the razor over the same area numerous times. Change the blade of your manual shaver or the head of your best electric razor every regularly, as instructed by the manufacturer. Clean your manual or electric shaver blades to keep it clean and like new at all time. A clean blade will work a gazillion times better than a dirty blade.

4. Shave with the grain, unless advised otherwise by the manufacturer. Shaving with the grain will decrease the chances of irritation. When shaving, make sure not too apply too much pressure and avoid passing over the same area over and over again as you are removing a small layer of skin each time (this is why having a sharp blade is important).

5. Moisturize. A step usually well taken care by women, but too often forgotten by men. Moisturizing your skin will keep it soft and will help promote healing your skin. If you have a sensitive skin, look for alcohol free lotions as it will make your skin sting and increase the irritation. Products containing aloe vera are great for irritated or sensitive skin.

Finally, be careful. Don’t shave in a hurry, make sure the blade you use is clean to avoid the chance of infection if you happen to cut yourself, don’t cheap out by using soap instead of shaving cream or gel, especially if you know that you have a sensitive skin.

If you never wondered about your personal odor, whether it is good or bad, you may want to take a minute to read the following article.

Several studies have shown that scents can trigger interest and excitement in people. Moreover, did you know that with a good scent on you, more women could be attracted to you? Aftershaves and shaving creams
aftershaveA good way to spike you scent is to wear some nicely scented shaving cream (menthol, lavender, lime and sandalwood are common options) (see Best Shaving Cream) or aftershave. Most popular cologne brands also offer the aftershave option. A nice aftershave will not only give you a nice scent, but will also soothe your skin and act as an antiseptic to prevent infection from cuts. How to choose a shaving cream tips

Type of skin

First of all, know your type of skin. Is your face more on the oily or dry side. If you have an oily skin, it would be better for you to choose a product containing a mild astringent to remove the excess of oil. Excess facial oil can mix with your facial hair causing your razor to clog more easily.

On the other hand, if your skin face tends to be more dry, you should look for a shaving cream that contains a moisturizer lotion. The lack of protective oil on dry skin will cause razor burns and increase the chances of skin nicks.

Skin problems? Consult a professional!

If you notice some recurring irritation, try changing your shaving cream. If the irritation is not going away or your notice other skin conditions, consult a dermatologist or other skin care professional that can help giveyou some professional advices on what can be the cause of your skin problems and what types of shaving creams or tips on how to eliminate, avoid or at least reduce the problem.

Other options you may want to look into are:

Choosing a shaving cream for sensitive skin

You don’t need to have a sensitive skin to choose the sensitive skin formula. As a matter of fact, the sensitive formula are the best choice for any type of skin. The sensitive skin formula contains less chemicals and tend to have more natural ingredients that are much better for your skin overall.

Choosing a shaving cream that foams

Some men likes the foaming creams, others prefer the gliding cream. Remember that if you have a sensitive facial skin, the foaming shaving creams tend to have more chemicals that may not be good for your skin.

Choosing a shaving cream with scents

Again, if you are known to have a sensitive skin, try to opt for the scentless creams, as they contains less ingredients, therefore reducing the chances of irritation. But if your skin doesn’t mind the nice scents, your wife won’t either!
